Color Theory & The Salk Institute

Fairmont State University Freshman Architecture Class
Color in Context: Revisiting Albers, with Anoka Faruqee

In this Freshman level course at Fairmont State architecture students are learning to hand render in color. Color terms are reviewed and discussed as they translate into digital terms. After watching Anoka Faruquee’s video students learn about Louis Kahn’s Salk Institute and use the tools of vanishing point and color adjacency rendering to complete the image shown on the screen of the Salk Institute Plaza. Section type drawings are discussed using Kahn’s building example. At the close of the video see how you might setup the drawing to complete the Salk Institute plaza sketch!

Drafting Invisible Cities in Revit (Part 2)

Inspired by Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities students are asked to sketch an imaginary city then draft it into Revit. (See the Invisible Cities Part 1 Video.) In this Part 2 video students learn how to develop a Construction Document Sheet Set with the different views required to understand their invisible city interpretation.

Creating Invisible Cities in Revit (Part 1)

Inspired by Italo Calvino’s book Invisible Cities students are asked to sketch an imaginary city then draft it into Revit. In this Part 1 of 2 video students learn how to create a topography and understand the scale of it by using Google Earth to compare places in Venice and NYC. Students learn to establish a base drawing by setting up Elevations. Complicated tools such as sweeps, reveals, and atypical forms are also covered.

Exporting Revit to Acad

Students learn to prepare an AutoCad file for use on a Laser Cutter. This drawing is exported from Revit 2022 into AutoCad 2019. Using line type layers to cut and score, students will have their house plans laser cut from chipboard after completing this video.

Introduction to Revit 2022

Freshman Architectural Students have learned four weeks of SketchUp, so this introduction to Revit compares those lessons with drafting in Autodesk Revit. This lesson is repetitive throughout so that students can remember keyboard shortcut commands.

Halfway through the video I describe the architect Maya Lin so that students can draft the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall and develop a response to it using their new Revit skills.
